That, as a public body, Plymouth Corporation ought to be a pattern in things of that kind, was the criticism passed by Mr. F. S. Huxham. at the annual meeting of the Plymouth Subarea of A.R.O., last week. This remark was prompted when the result was given of the protest made by the subarea, against the keeping, by the Plymouth transport authority, of a waiting list of drivers, instead of making use of the Employment Exchange as is done by other operators.
Mr. j. Metcalfe was re-elected chairman, and Mr. W. Baker, as vice-chairman.
It was reported that Mr. H. Gilbert and Mr. R. Lose were unable to continue as committee members, but the remainder of the committee were re-elected en bloc as follows :—Messrs. Curtis, Frape, C. The view that operators of heavy vehicles could bring about the raising of the speed limit from 20 m.p.h. to 30 m.p.h. by rigidly operating within the present limit, was put before members of the Leicester Sub-area of the C.M.U.A. by Mr. W. Latham, at a meeting held on Monday last.
"If we could persuade operwrs of heavy vehicles to observe the 20 m.p.h. limit it would so steady the whole of the traffic on the roads that there would be an outcry from every other road-user for that limit to be increased," argued Mr. Latham.
He further argued that the speed limit of 20 m.p.h. on vehicles of over 21 tons unladen weight, operated against the man who considered the safety of the public, and in favour of the man who bought lighter types of vehicle and consistently overloaded them, as well as taking advantage of the higher speed he was allowed.
"The time has come when operators should insist, for their own welfare, that all should obey the law and the conditions on their licences," he said. " The time must come when it should be part of the Association's duty to make representations to the licensing authorities against those people who flagrantly disobey the law."
