• An innovative loading system for ISO containers is under development at Boughton Group's Bell Lane plant in Amersham, Bucks.
The Boughton Isosceles is a commercial version of its highly successful Mk 18 semi-trailer loader, 320 of which have been ordered by the US Marine Corps.
Mounted on a tri-axle semitrailer for 38 tonne GCW operation, it provides the ability to load and unload 6.1m/20-tonne containers unaided.
To load, the trailer is reversed to the container where the rearhinged mast and crossbar mechanism is elevated hydraulically through 90°.
The cross beam is attached and raised by hooked chains. As the container lifts, the vehicle is drawn under it.
Finally the loader mechanism pulls the container fully on to the trailer where it is locked down in place with ISO twistlocks.
The entire cycle, including the use of a wheeled rear stabiliser for loads over 10 tonnes, is controlled from the front of the trailer using five two-way levers.
Boughton expects to have a prototype ready by the autumn and is also looking at ways to extend the design.
