National Freight Corporation deputy chairman G. W. Quick Smith reached the end of his official term of office on Tuesday of this week. He tells me he's off on a very restful holiday now that chairman Dan Pettit is back to "mind the shop" after the CIT Canadian visit, "QS", as he's affectionately known by his colleagues, has been with the NFC and its predecessor, the THC, for nearly nine years—but he's been involved in road transport since 1935. And he's recently been given that rare accolade, honorary membership of the RHA in recognition of his contribution to transport.

The familiar team that ran State road transport so successfully is really getting broken up this year. Already QS's former boss, Sir Reginald Wilson, is in the chair over at Transport Development Group, having reached NFC retirement age last autumn. Now 1 hear that E. G. Marsden, secretary and chief officer of the National Freight Federation, and long-time colleague of Sir Reginald and QS, is retiring this
