AN application for three 4-ton tippers on B licence to carry excavation materials, shale and imported filling materials for Durham motorway roadworks was refused by the Northern deputy Licensing Authority last week at Sunderland.

Mr. Robert Burnett, -Sunderland dairyman, who is disposing of his business, applied for thc licences to cover an area within a 30-mile radius of Darlington.

His original application was amended From 10 vehicles to three. The licences were required for vehicles which had been employed off the road on site work for the first stage of the Durham motorway, for the Dowsett Engineering and Construction Co.

Supporting the application. Mr. Thomas Everett, stores manager for Dowsett, said the company could give work to Burnett if the grant were Made. Construction work on the Durham motorway had been held up because Dowsett could not get sufficient vehicles.

Only one of seven objectors gave evidence. Mr. Leslie Morgan, transport manager for Geoffrey Dixon. haulage contractor, said his firm could provide he vehicles required by Dowsett if given 24 hours' notice. In the past some 30 to 40 lorries a day had been employed on haulage work for the motorway. That number was now down to 10 a day because Dowsett was having to stockpile material. The vehicles taken off the work were on day-to-day work of a temporary nature.

Refusing the application, the deputy LA. Mr, H. Bewick. said the applicants had failed to make out a prima foci(' case for a grant. On the other hand, the objections had been sustained,
