the Scottish 1-1 deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. L. A. Wells, refused an application for a new A licence by Atlas Express Ltd. to replace two A licences and one B which would be surrendered if the grant were made.
The application 'was opposed by British Railways, British Road Services Ltd., Highland Haulage Ltd., Inverness, and three local hauliers. Four vehicles were sought to extend the applicant's present area of operation to include Angus and Kincardine in the south and occasionally to the counties of Inverness and North.
Mr. James Anderson, manager of the applicant's Aberdeen branch, gave evidence and was cross-examined for almost four hours. He said that Atlas Express had three main customers for whom they provided storage, but they had hundreds of other small customers. ,
For one of the company's main customers, Reckitts and Colmans Ltd., a B licence was operated with traffic solely for that firm, but it was insufficient to carry all the traffic.
The objectors submitted there was no case to answer and the deputy LA accepted their plea. Mr. Wells said that he had every sympathy with the applicants in that it was difficult to show small customer inconvenience. The evidence, however, was weak and the figures submitted less than clear.
