SCOTTISH Conservative MPs have persuaded two Government Ministers to investigate what they call "savage" increases in charges recently imposed by British Railways for transporting fish from Scottish inshore ports by passenger train, reports our Political Correspondent.

A deputation which went to see Mr. Stephen Swingler (Ministry of Transport) and Mr. George Willis (Scottish Office) pointed out that. in addition to increased charges. British Railways had also cut down their facilities for transporting fish.

Backed by a strong House of Commons motion condemning this action, which was said to be damaging the fishing industry and the wholesale and retail trade, the MPs also pressed home a particular point about the lack of alternative transport.

The Ministers agreed to take up the complaints with British Railways—and also to look thoroughly into the question of the lack of a suitable competitor to the railways for this trade.
