Vehicles to be withdrawn from quarries not paying acceptable rates

.1-A A RESOLUTION was passed unanimously by the 213 Mendip tipper operators
who attended the mass meeting in Coleford on Friday affirming that they would withdraw their services not later than July 1 this year from a number of those quarries who have not introduced rates that accord with schedules submitted by the Mendip tipper operators committee of the RHA Western area.
The quarries from whom services will be withdrawn exclude those who have increased rates to a level acceptable to the hauliers working for them, or have agreed to do so. It is stipulated in the resolution that, in this case, work be continued at these rates 'provided the quarry is prepared further to negotiate a rates structure based on the RHA schedule not later than October 31, 1965. Withdrawal will apply to quarries who have refused to reply to or negotiate with operators or who have submitted offers that are not considered reasonable by the hauliers. The exact date on which withdrawals will be made is to be decided by the committee.

Of the 20 or so quarries in the area, three have accepted the schedule unreservedly and a number of the remainder have informed the committee by letter, or a visiting member of the RHA by word of mouth, that they are open to negotiation. Acceptances have been received from Perry and Perry Ltd., Lulsgate Quarry Ltd. and Hine Quarries Ltd., whilst Foster Yeoman Ltd. have agreed to a schedule, applicable as an interim measure, that is acceptable to the operators concerned. The recent increase of 7 per cent in the rates paid by S. C. Gibson and Sons Ltd. is not acceptable to the hauliers, but increases in prospect may be acceptable. The Gibson concern has rejected the schedule.
