MR. W. C. WILSON has been appointed a deputy-director of finance at the Ministry of Transport.
MR. W. BRAMHAM has been appointed a director and general manager of Northern Coachbuilders, Ltd., Newcastle-on-Tyne.
MR. J. W. GARTON has resigned chairmanship of the Hoffmann Manufacturing Co., Ltd., on his appointment as managing director, . and has been succeeded as chairman by MR. S. G. NEWTON.
MR. I. F. SMALL, acting general manager of Cardiff Transport Department, has been recommended by the transport committee for appointment as general manager, in succession to the late MR. J. W. DUNNING.
MR. G. L. SAMUELSON, secretary of the Royal Automobile Club, and CAPT. A. W. PHILLIPS, M.C., general manager of the associate section, have been made Knights of the Order of the Dannebrog by the King of Denmark.
MR. R. I. H. LONGMAN, MR. H. W. C. GRAND and MR. R. BAGWELL have been appointed to the board of Crosville Motor Services, Ltd., to fill -vacancies caused by the retirement of MR. G. CARDWELL. SIR JAMES MILNE and MR. G. ROYDF SMITH.
MR. ROBERT C. STANLEY, chairman and president of the International Nickel Co. of Canada, Ltd., recently received from SIR ARTHUR SMOUT, president of the Institute of Metals, the Institute's platinum medal for 1948. in recognition of his outstanding services to the non-ferrous metal industries.
MR, A. E. TIFFIN has been appointed assistant general secretary of the Transport and General Workers' Union, For many years a London bus driver, he has wide experience in all branches of the Union's work. The post was vacated by MR. HAROLD CLAY on becoming a member of the Road Transport Executive.
MR. JAMES Amos, 0.B.E., director and general manager (bus department) of the Scottish Motor Traction Co., Ltd., has been elected president of the Scottish Road Passenger Transport Association for 1948-49. BAILIE GEORGE DAVIDSON, convener of Dundee Transport Committee, is vicepresident. MR. THOMAS GRAY, M.IisisT.T., is honorary secretary and treasurer.
MR. J. H. VIVIAN, founder of J. H. Vivian and Co., Ltd., a concern of mechanical and electrical engineers which operates throughout the Union of South Africa and the Rhodesias, and chairman and managing director of the British and Union Rubber Manufacturing Co., -Ltd., is on a visit to this country. He was accompanied on the voyage by MR. G. C. DAVIS, resident manager in South Africa for Oldham and Son, Ltd., for which the Vivian concern is sole agent in the Union.

MR. A. L. CASTLEMAN has been reelected chairman of the Metropolitan Section of the Institute of Transport. MR. DAVID BLEE, M. H. C. CRANE and MR. G. F. SINCLAIR have also been re-elected vice-chairmen. MR. G. H. SEARLE is honorary treasurer, and MR. C. F. KING honorary secretary. The section has now prepared its programme for the 1948-49 session. This includes an address on "Efficiency Control in Large Transport Undertakings," by SIR WILLIAM WOOD, on

FOUR representatives of the Rootes group have been visiting Africa, East Africa and the Middle East to study market conditions and their effects on sales, service and design. Mr. G. A. W. Laird, overseas production manager, was accompanied by Mr. C. H. Hylton. truck specialist; Mr. J. M. Brunton, Commer-Karrier service manager, Luton, and Mr, B. G. Dumont, Rootes Middle East service representative.
Territories covered so far include South Africa, East Africa, Tanganyika, Zanzibar, Kenya, Gold Coast, Belgian Congo and Egypt. Government Ministers, leading business men, distributors and operators have been visited.

PRICES in general appeared to show an increase at the five-day auction sale of Government surplus vehicles. trailers and motorcycles, which was conducted at Winterslow by Messrs.
