An Excellent Array of Vehicles and Appliances to be Displayed and Demonstrated at the Annual Event of the Institute of Public Cleansing

HE 39th Annual Conference of the 1 Institute of Public Cleansing opens on Monday next and continues until the following Friday. The chief feature of interest to our readers will be the exhibition of public cleansing vehicles and appliances at the Car Park, Foreness Bay, on Thursday, June 17. We give an outline of the Various exhibits, the information being based on particulars supplied by the manufacturers. Certain of the papers to be read at the conference will be reviewed in our next issue, whilst an eye-witness account of the demonstration will be given in the following number.

The Associated Equipment Co., Ltd., Southall, Middlesex, will be represented by a refuse collector incorporating the Ideal body and being similar to the three vehicles recently supplied to Tottenham Borough Council. The Monarch chassis is used as the basis of this model.

,"•The Ideal body is loaded from the rear and the contents of the hopper are emptied into the main container, the collector rotatingupwards to an elevation of 110-degrees. The compression of the contents by vertical elevation and pounding enables 22 cubic yds. of refuse to be accommodated in a 15cubic-yd. container.

Messrs. William Bunce and San, Ashbury, Swindon, will be demonstrating a _couple of snowploughs, a squeegee

• and a road-gritting machine. The lastnamed can he attached to any make of • lorry, from the tailboard of which it is refed while travelling.

Six vehicles will bring the name of Dennis Brothers, Ltd., of Guildford, into prominence and, by reason of the present-clay protection schemes, the 700-gallon gully-emptier, with supple mentary equipment, will undoubtedly attract much attention, It is based on an 11-ft.-wheelbase normal-control chassis. For gas decontamination two ring jets, fed from the same pump, are • mounted on top of the cab.

Another normal-control chassis, but with a 9-ft. 4-in. wheelbase, serves as the foundation for a street sweeper carrying a 500-gallon water tank.

The refuse-collection side of the company's activities will be emphasized by a 7-cubic-yd. model with three sliding covers along each side, a 10-cubic-yd. machine with a moving floor, and a 15-cubic-yd. collector.

The final exhibit will be a refuse container unit, having an 11-ft. 8-in. wheelbase forward-control chassis as J338

its basis. This is equipped with a slanting steel superstructure, carryinga set of 1i-cubic-yd. refuse containers.

As a municipal specialist, the Eagle Engineering Co., Ltd., Warwick, Will use several prominent makes of chassis to display its products. A Morris-Commercial Leader will . carry a rearloading moving-floor refuse body, which embodies a special six-seater cab and a patent roller shutter above the tailboard.

Thornycroft chassis—one a Trusty and the other a Sturdy—will also be in evidence, the former carrying a Cornpressmore rear-loading refuse-collection body and the latter an 800-gallon vacuum gully-emptying tank. The compressing ram of the collector is of the hydraulic type and the compressing barrier takes the form of a taildoor.

Another example of the Compressmore body will be seen attached to an Rlectricar electric mechanical horse-the product of Electricars, Ltd., Lawley Street, Birmingham.

The 'exhibit will include an Eagle 5-6 cubic yds. two-wheeled trailer for use with horses and tractors.

Two municipal bodies mounted on Forc:lson chassis will be demonstrated by the Ford Motor Co., Ltd., one--a moving-floor refuse-collector made by Transport Engineering, Ltd., being mounted on a 3-ton normal-control chassis, and the other—an Eagle 10cubic-yd. refuse loader—on a forwardcontrol chassis. The capacity Of the former is 10-11 cubic yds. and the weight of the complete vehicle is under three tons. The other Fordson collector has a steel body, arranged for side loading.

Details of the Principality moving floor will be available for inspection on a Garner 3-ton low-loading refuse collector displayed by Garner Motors, Ltd., North Acton Road, London, N.W.10. Features of the body are the roomy cab for accommodating five loaders in addition to the driver, and a compartment for waste paper, etc.

Hygienic Refuse Containers, Ltd., 39, Victoria Street, London, S.W.1, intends to exhibit a low-loading chassis carrying an all-steel -bodyincorporating a detachable dome equipped with dustless loading shutters.

Equipment to be shown by Johnston Brothers (Contractors), Ltd., 35, Crutched Friars, London, E.C.3, comprises several items of interest to public-cleansing authorities. There will be two gritters, one of which is a recent development. Another new appliance is the leaf lifter, which is also built for towing behind a lorry.

One of the largest displays will be that of Karrier Motors, Ltd., Biscot Road, Luton, which is arranging to send seven of its municipal appliances to the Conference. Two will be of outstanding interest, for the reason that they are to make their first public appearance. One is a road sweeper, the basis of which is a modified Bantam

thassis—the smallest four-wheeler in the Karrier range—and the other a 1,600-gallon gully-emptier, having the new CK5 chassis as its foundation.

The well-known RSC sweeper-collector will also be on view and the cleverly curved road brush, with which it is equipped, should be examined.

Another gully-emptier, which is also suitable for cesspool work, is the Bantam 500-gallon appliance which, like the bigger machine, has Yorkshire equipment.

The refuse-collector side will be represented by three machines, one—a Bantam—being a standard product of 7-cubic-yds. capacity; another, based on the CK3 chassis being of I2-16-cubicyds. capacity and incorporating a Transport moving floor; and the third a similar product, but of 10-cubic-yds. capacity.

An L-type three-wheeled sweeper, built to the order of the Nottingham authorities, will _form the exhibit of Lacre Lorries, Ltd., 76, Bridge Road East, Welwyn. Several improvements have been incorporated in this popular machine, including a streamlined body, which gives a smarter appearance.

Two types of sweeper-collector are to be shown by Lewin Road Sweepers, Ltd., Jack Lane, Leeds. One is the VSC, which is equipped with a vacuum suCtion apparatus, and the other the SSC, which does not incorporate this feature but has in its place a 170-gallon water tank and pressure-fed sprinklers. The chassis are identical, being 2-ton short-wheelbase modified Bedfords, giving a small turning circle.

A 10-cubic-yd. van-type refuse collector will be exhibited by Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd., Birmingham. It is a vehicle well suited to the conditions usually found in urban and rural districts, and the chassis, being of the forward-control type, permits easy manceuvrability in restricted areas. The steel-lined body has three canvas covers on each side, and allows for the conveyance of bulky articles, in addition to a good load of ordinary household refuse. The loading level is about 4 ft. 6 ins.

Of the refuse collectors which will be B40

included in the exhibit of Scaminell Lorries, Ltd., Watford, the smallest is a 6-cubic-yd. appliance, based on a mechanical horse chassis. It is a sideloading collector and the body is tipped by Edbro hand hydraulic gear.

A mechanical horse also serves as the motive unit of a 12-cubic-yd. van-type semi-trailer refuse collector, which incorporates a moving floor in its design. The refuse carrier can be provided with easily detachable horse shafts and used for door-to-door refuse collection.

Another type of refuse collector is known as a vertical bin carrier, and is expressly intended for dealing with the waste from blocks of flats. The semitrailer carries six tipping bins.

The exhibit will be completed by a 780-gallon gully-emptier in semi-trailer form and a 1,200-gallon street washer, with anti-gas apparatus.

Shelvoke and Drewry, Ltd., Letchworth, is always well to the fore at cleansing conferences and, on this occasion, is exhibiting a complete range of refuse collectors, comprising side loaders and rear loaders with moving floors. Their capacities range from 6 cubic yds. to 15 cubic yds.

In addition, there will be a gullyemptier, and a Freighter for the collection of street sweepings. A Chelseatype refuse collector, will be shown with equipment for gas decontamination.

Of the three machines which John T. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd., Thornycroft House, Smith Square, London, S.W.1, intends to show, two will be based on the Sturdy chassis. One will be an 800-gallon gully and cesspit emptier with decontamination gear. and the other a 16-cubic-yd. end-loading refuse collector, incorporating an Eagle body with hand-operated moving floor.

Another Eagle speciality, the Compressmore all-steel body, id which we have already referred, will be to the fore on a Trusty chassis.

The products of Transport Engineering, Ltd., 561, Old Kent Road, London, S.E.1, will be well in evidence on a number of vehicles, but three machines will be independently displayed by the company. One is the Propeller compression-type refuse collector, which has a cylindrical container, equipped with a Transport power-driven moving floor. The refuse is introduced into the container by a dual-worm conveyer. The gear compresses 25-30 cubic yds. of refuse into a 12-cubic-yd. container. This body will be shown on a Dennis six-wheeled chassis, a make which will also be employed to draw attention to the features of the Transport all-steel moving-floor rear-loading refuse-collection body.

The third exhibit will be a semitrailer refuse-collection body, coupled up to a Harrier Cob mechanical horse.

Two refuse collectors will comprise the exhibit of Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., Luton. The smaller machine is based on a Bedford 2-ton chassis and the body has side loading hand-operated dust covers. Bromilow and Edwards hydraulic end-tipping gear is used to discharge the load. The maker's 3-ton .chassis will be shown carrying an Eagle 15-cubic-yd. moving-floor body.

Two refuse collectors are also to be displayed by the Vulcan Motor and Engineering Co., Ltd., Crossens, Southport, both being based on the 2-ton forward-control low-loading chassis. One will have an all-steel body with three sliding covers along each side, the end-tipping gear by which it is raised being of Edbro make. The other chassis will be shown with a 10-11-cubic-yd. rear-loading barriertype refuse-collection body, incorporating the Principality moving floor with remote control.

The Phenix, Prodigy and the Paragon refuse collectors will comprise the exhibit of Walker Brothers (Wigan), Ltd., Wigan. The Phcenix is a standard refuse collector, equipped with hoisting gear and washing apparatus, operated by electric power, for dealing with containers used at flats and institutions.

The standard body of the Prodigy has a capacity of 15-16 cubic yds.
