ONE of the few London concerns N./which builds its own bodies for vehicles it rtinS on•pasSeriger services is Birch Bros., Ltd., Cathcart Street, Kentish Town, N.W.5, and one of the latest it has completed is a 30-seater which has been mounted on a Cilford chassis of the forward-control pattern, the -vehicle being shod with 38-in. by 7-in. pneumatic tyres. The company

putting a number of vehicles of this type into service, and the first of them is shown in an accompanying illustration.

The body has been built and the seating planned so that all passengers are accommodated in absolute comfort, there being no suggestion of cramping of the legs or knees and no trouble arising through the protrusion of the

wheel-arches into the interior. The latter difficulty is overcome by raising the floor of the body 9 ins, above the !chassis members, the intermediate space being turned to account for the accommodation of passengers' Ingghge.

The conch is of the type having fixed forward corner of the body and the other behind the rear Ivheel-arch. Ths doors are of the flush-fitting pattern with sunken handles, and they extend for the full depth of the body side.

All the side windows can be lowered and the mechanism by which they are controlled is the latest Rawlings sidelocking type. Above the main lights are lonvre ventilators, and the channels for them as well as the frame for the windscreen are chromium-plated ; as a matter of fact, there are no metal fittings which require polishing in the body.

The seating is planned on conventional lines double armchairs havtng sprung squabs and extra deep cushions being employed; rug-rails and ash-trays are amongst the interior fittings.

The ceilings of the fixed portions of the _roof are smartly panelled in fabric, which is relieved by polished mouldings

and flush-fitting lamps. The interior 1341)

lighting arrangements have been specially studied, for it has been pointed out to Birch Bros., Ltd., that the usual lighting is somewhat unkind on complexions, and for this reason flame sprayed bulbs of 18 watts are used. The new vehicle has been approved by Scotland Yard.
