• Traffic area staff are being balloted on whether they wish to take industrial action "short of striking" over the closure of two Traffic Area Offices (see News Extra, page 13).
The aim is to defend the 80 jobs at risk from the closure of Cardiff and Manchester and also to prevent the staff in other areas being burdened by increased workloads without the help of extra staff. The results of the ballot are due on 19 July. Staff at the Cambridge and Eastbourne offices are not voting--they are not affected by redundancies or extra work from the two closures.
John Moloney, spokesman for the DOT unions, says management has agreed to meet unions this week to discuss the possibility of some staff having their employment extended in other civil service posts beyond the 31 March 1997 shut-down.
