Commercial Motor helped to establish Truckfest as the premier event on the trucking calendar, we've extended our sponsorship to Truckfest South-West—and a great time was had by all . . • It takes more than gales and ,-,Iiowers to keep trucking enthusiasts away from a Truckfest.
Despite the weather, last weekend's Truckfest SouthWest, sponsored for the first time by Commercial Motor, proved that it is fast turning into an event which could well rival the main May Bank Holiday Truckfest. Alongside familiar names and faces at Shepton Mallet were plenty of newcomers with well-prepared trucks that could be in the running for honours at Peterborough next year.
With wagons from as far away as the Netherlands, Truckfest South West was a truly international event, and once again UK operators proved that they are happy to travel long distances to join the fun.
The organisers recognise the effort involved with an award for those travelling the furthest. Until last Thursday that award could well have gone to Truckfest favourite Graham Cordiner of Peterhead, who drove his immaculate Scania 143.470 down to the Shepton showground only to have it suffer an electrical fire which destroyed the main wiring loom.
Cordiner's gloom was lifted on Sunday by a special award from the Royal Forest of Dean truckers. The line-up of winners included Trevor Streeter's timeless F88 Volvo which finished top in the Mobil Custom Truck Competition while the BP Best New Truck went to Blagden Packaging's H-reg Scania.
Regular rewarded Truckfest regular Andersons Bulk Haulage picked up yet another Best Kept Fleet award along with a first for Best Kept Owner Driver Vehicle sponsored by Owner Operators (UK); Ray Leigh's Scania sixlegger took the Best Kept Working Truck (rigid) prize sponsored by Dieseline.
The Chitty Group scooped a double at Shepton, winning the CDC Best Company Owned Vehicle then grabbing the ultimate prize as winners of the Commercial Motor Best Kept Working Truck Trophy with its Volvo F10.
The standard of preparation from all the entrants was impressive, but Mark Workman's Foden and the Maguires Transport fleet were particularly eye catching.
The Truckfest concept continues to grow and grow.
