Although the police at present have powers to arrest persons committing an assault on board a bus, they cannot arrest for breaches of the psv regulations. The maximum penalty for these breaches is £100. They can only ask for the offender's name and address which, if it proves to be false, may be useless. The new Bill will give powers of arrest in a situation where the offender has failed to give police the correct name and address.
