Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Here's an advance warning for you and your friends to remember when the trade dinner season comes round again.

A friend recently saw a fellow diner suffer a particularly nasty burn; the chap had ordered one of those literally flaming liqueurs—probably zambocca—and he put the palm of his hand flat across the top of the glass to extinguish it. The flame must have taken some seconds to die out, and so created a vacuum which prevented him from pulling his hand away. The result ? A ring burned into the palm of the hand.
