Wing nuts specification

The British Standards Institution has revised BS 856: 1939— Specification for Wing Nuts (Metric and inch Units), following the decision to adopt the ISO metric screw thread system in the UK. The revised specification is BS 856:1969. '

Before preparing this revision consideration was given to a new and separate specification, based on metric concepts and modules of measurement, to cover ISO metric and ISO inch (unified) threaded wing nuts, because BS 856:1939 referred only to BSW. BSF and BA threaded products. Accordingly a review was made of current European specifications covering metric series wing nuts, but as there was little agreement between these it was decided to maintain (pending any future ISO agreements) the basic geometry of wing nuts established by BS 856:1939 which was based on inch modules of measurement. The revision thus makes provision for accommodating ISO metric and ISO inch (unified) screw threads within the currently established wing-nut blanks, which will avoid unnecessary retooling and expense within British industry. References to the obsolescent BSW,BSF and BA threads will be retained until they become obsolete and can be withdrawn.

Rotary pumps

The Stainless Steel Pumps range of N. D. stainless steel positive rotary pumps is now being fitted with the latest Sealol Class 530 Type H mechanical gland seals.

These seals can rotate in either direction, enabling the pump to be used in reverse without attention to the seals. The light-load springs allow the rotor case/seal housing to be fitted without the use of draw-bolts.

The use of fully-developed stainless-steel-shrouded carbon rotary-seal rings has increased the pressure capability of the seals and reduced the possibility of damage by mishandling.

A length has been retained allowing a double-seal arrangement to be fitted in the normal gland space. The ability of the Type H seals to accept the pressure differential in either direction means that barrier fluids can be used without being pressurized above the system pressure.

These seals meet the stringent hygiene requirements. demanded by the food industry and can be simply fitted inside existing stuffing boxes for conversion from soft packing to mechanical seal and vice versa.

Using these glands permits one type of pump to be used for all applications, Existing stainless steel pumps, either the current N. D. series or earlier R.E.C. range having stuffing box glands, can be converted to Class 530 Type H seals if required on site so there is no question of any outdating by the perfecting of the new-type seal. Made by: Stainless Steel Pumps Ltd., Finmere Road, Eastbourne, Sussex.

Mobile racks

A mobile racking system, suitable for storing auto-spares, produced by the Bruynzeel Storage Equipment Co., comprises a series of storage racks travelling on ground rails and provides up to double the capacity of a static system in a given floor area.

This increased capacity is obtained by eliminating the need for access gangways to each rack. When access is required to a particular unit, a gangway is provided by moving the remaining units. The system is available in manually operated or pneumatically powered form. Manual units are suitable for rack loads up to 2 tons and the powered system is capable of handling loads up to 30 tons per storage block.

The power system is operated by a control button fitted to each mobile unit. This activates a pneumatic ram fitted to the base of the unit which pushes other units along the metal tracks. A special safety plinth is fitted to each rack which automatically cuts off the power when an obstruction is met, so that it is impossible for a gangway to close when in use.

The Bruynzeel mobile systems are particularly suitable for the storage of auto-spares, where many components are only required at infrequent intervals. When closed the banks of units are virtually air-tight.

A modular shelving system is incorporated in the construction of the storage units. Detachable brackets allow for the easy alteration of shelf lieights so that maximum use can be made of available space. In addition to the shelf system, special bin fronts and dividers can be fitted to specification.

Made by: Bruynzeel Storage Equipment Co„ Stocklake, Aylesbury, Bucks.

Hydraulic system

A hand-operated hydraulic handling system—claimed as one of the lightest on the market—is now in the A. C. Penman range of demountable containers.

A skeletal frame and hydraulics which are fitted to the vehicle frame weigh approximately 5cwt. The self-contained hydraulic unit is operated by a pumping handle situated at the side of the vehicle. The hydraulics act on a torsion frame bar with central lifting cam. At each end of the torsion bar there are arms which give the necessary stability to the container as it is being lifted. As this is done telescopic legs drop down until a load-supporting pin engages and locks them. The hydraulics are then lowered out of the way and the vehicle can be moved clear of the container. Made by: A. C. Penman Ltd., Dumfries, Scotland.

Metal hoses

A low-cost, semi-open-pitch range of flexible metal hoses has been introduced by the Plessey Dynamics Group's power auxiliaries division.

After a study of industrial requirements the division found that in some cases applications employing close-pitch, high

flexibility hoses could be ade quately served by the use of a les: flexible but equally effective semi open-pitch type. The hose is high-pressure type with applica tions to hydraulic power circuit: on vehicles.

This less expensive hose, it I: claimed, will meet requirement: in many other applications when close-pitch hose is ruled ou because of its relatively high cost In many cases. the use of a semi open pitch hose eliminates timi and labour now spent in manipu lating rigid pipework.

Hoses in the new range cove diameters from 4n. to tin. A: considerably less raw tube required, this provides the addi tional benefits of less weight are fewer welded joints, which appl, to an even greater extent in thi case of open-pitch hoses. fo which the division offers al established range coverire diameters from &. to 2in.

All flexible metal hoses pro duced by the division are subjec to regular quality control testinj to Ministry of Technology Specifi cation DTD3955. The divisioi has the facility for pressun cycling up to 3,000 p.s.i., tern perature cycling up to 750deg C and vibration testing up to maximum thrust of 750Ib.

BSI thermal standard

The British Standards lnstitutior has published a standard 85 4424:1968 describing method: by which the thermal perfor mance of insulated equipmen used for carrying perishablE foodstuffs in all forms of surfau transport, can be tested. Equip rnent in this context covers am form of insulated box, body, o container for transporting perish able goods, regardless of thi mobile carrier of which Mt equipment may or may not fore an integral part.

Testing is divided into fou sections, the first of which give details of the general require ments necessary to undertak( the tests and provides informa tion concerning sources of hea leakage and notes on specifii heat leakage. Three other sec tions cover in detail the proce dures -for carrying out measure ment of heat leakage unde steady state conditions by inter nal cooling, by internal heatim and by air leakage tests. Appian dix A to the standard has beer included to provide informatior concerning the measurement o

heat leakage in the transient state, as this method may in due course be accepted as an alternative to measurement by internal-heating and air-leakage tests. Further appendices deal respectively with miscellaneous tests from which additonal information can be obtained concerning the condition of the equipment in service and with the testing facilities which are required.

The BSI Committee responsible for the preparation of this standard has taken particular account of the work of the Inland Transport Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) concerning the agreements on special equipment for the transport of perishable foodstuffs. In the light of subsequent agreements within the ECE, consideration may be given to preparing a standard covering the thermal performance of equipment under specified condition of operation.

Self-service cabinet

An upright self-service metal cabinet 7ft tall and 5ft wide with compartments for workshop tools has been announced by Robert Powell Services.

Main feature of the system, called Jyveil, is that each staff member is issued with his own set of numbered keys which are inserted into slots to open compartments when borrowing tools, so doing away with the need to queue or sign chits. He 'cannot subsequently withdraw his keys, and only the foreman or other supervisor who has a master key can retrieve them.

The system functions 24 hours a day. Cabinets can be set up in lines, and half-height units can be supplied.

The system has been successfully tried out in .several French Motor industry workshops; it is claimed that not only have large economies been made but that it has been well received by management and staff.

Zinc coating

From Spectra Chemicals comes Zinc-Cote which provides for cold application of zinc coating by aerosol.

It is said to give a rust-proof base on all metal surfaces and added protection of metal castings, casings, components and pipework and of all metal structures or fittings exposed to the elements.

With a 90 per cent dry-film zinc content, Zinc-Cote is quickdrying, unaffected by oils arid most chemicals, resists atmospheric and salt corrosion and withstands temperatures up to 400deg C.

It does not impede welding as the high-metal content allows the striking of an arc and adheres to galvanized surfaces. The treated surface will accept most paint finishes.

Outrigging winding gear

An optional integral outrigger is available that steadies the external winding shaft of Intertruck Mk 6 semi-trailer landing legs. The steady is of 5in. by 2in. box-section steel and is 9 long. It provides a rigid unit for accommodating the winding handle and two-speed gearbox of the landing gear.

The maker points out that in the absence of such an outrigger it is normal practice for trailer builders to attach a separate steady-bracket to the underside of the trailer: there is then risk of winding-shaft misalignment because of subsequent distortion of the bracket or the trailer frame and this can result in poor mesh

ing of the landing-let gearing and damage to the gear teeth.

Specifying the outrigger also makes it easier to arrange twospeed, twin-drive winding from both sides rather than from one side of the trailer, as is usual. When either-side two-speed drive is fitted in this way both landing legs have identical righthand screw jacks.

Made by: Intertruck Ltd., International Truck and Trailer Equipment, Dewlands Industrial Estate, Dartford, Kent.

Price: Mk 6 legs with outrigged winding gear, £50 5s.

High pressure filter

A range of Micronic resin impregnated paper-element filters introduced by the Automotive Products Group's filter division, is designed specifically for use in high-pressure hydraulic systems.

These filters are additional to the range of return-line and suction elements and reservoir breathers made by AP at Bolton, and are suitable for pressures of up to 4,000 psi. Three basic models make up the new range and comprise a single-element filter, a twin-element model and a triple-element type. All are equipped with a standard Micronic replacement element, Type MFH 603A. Nine sizes are produced with capacities of 22 gal /min up to 66 gal /min.

Applications will include offhighway vehicles, earth movers, machinery for the digger-dumper industry, marine units and machine tools. The filter also has many general industrial uses.

The element is of the normal AP Micronic pattern but incorporates a specially strengthened centre-tube to give the necessary high collapse strength re

quired in high-pressure applications. Locating webs in the elements maintain them in a central position on a rod attached to the base of the filter sump. All elements are provided with seals at each end to ensure a good seal between the element multiples and the filter housing. The extruded steel sump screws onto a spheroidal-graphite iron head casting, the head being common to all three models.

The filters incorporate a full-. flow relief valve and can be fitted with either a mechanical or electrical pressure differential indicator to give warning of impending element blockage. Indicators are set to operate before the relief valve opens so that operators can carry out an element change before unfiltered fluid circulates round the system.

Mechanical and electrical indicators are interchangeable. In basic form the filter is fitted with a blanking plug in place of an indicator.
