LONDON'S TRAMS PAY ON LAST NIGHT THE trams are paying to-night," " remarked a London Transport Executive official last Saturday, when Londoners turned out in force to see the last of the capital's trams. Many parties hired trams for a final joyride and the L.T.E. staff made great efforts to ensure that all arrangements went smoothly.

A crowd of 35,000 people lined a 300-yd. stretch of road by New Crossdepot for the reception of the last tram of all, No. 1951, from Woolwich. It possibly achieved a record loading figure, for passengers were being carried even on the roof.

A breakdown occurred just outside the depot, when the vehicle was immobilizd because of the attentions of souvenir hunters. No. 1931, the first trans to run through the Kingsway Tunnel, was brought out to tow it a few yards, and No. 1951 was enabled to complete the last few feet by itself.. It was driven by Mr. John Cliff, deputy chairman of the L.T.E.
