THE EU'S revamped drivers' hours rules come into effect on 11 April, replacing the existing regs that date back to 1985, Sally Thornley, manager of compliance information services at the Freight Transport Association, says one of the biggest changes will affect weekly rest: under the new regs drivers will be allowed to reduce their rest to 24 hours at the vehicle's base, rather than only when the vehicle and driver are away from base.

This will enhance flexibility, as drivers will effectively be allowed to work more hours within a given week at base.

Another important difference is that a full 45 hours' rest must be taken in any two-week period, removing the ability to work six days every week.
