EASTERN AREA TC Geoffrey Simms has blamed the demise of Felixstowe haulage company Matthew Cornish Transport on the former directors' "managerial and financial incompetence". He also noted that its trucks had been operated without insurance.

CM investigated MCT in August; it went into administration soon after (CM 31 August).

Simms called MCT and its two directors, Michael Meyjes and Richard Land, to public inquiry in November, but neither attended despite warnings from the Traffic Area Office. Simms disqualified the firm and both directors from holding or obtaining a licence in any Traffic Area for five years.

Land requested a stay against his revocation until an appeal could be heard, claiming he had been denied the opportunity to put his case. Simms says the request was motivated by his acquisition of another firm. Heavypack Haulage. Land has since resigned as a director there. Refusing the stay, Simms said: "A solvent and profitable business was destroyed within nine months of a change of ownership through the managerial and financial incompetence of the directors."

Simms added that his decision was to protect "the public purse and the financial interests of [other] companies from the commercial activities of an incompetent person.Land is appealing to the Transport Tribunal.
