• Drivers taking their LGV driving tests from July face a written multiple-choice examination on road use theory and attitude.
The test will last about 40 minutes and will cost between £13 and £15 in addition to the standard driving test fee. It will be taken at one of 130 examination offices around the country and learners will have to pass it before taking the traditional driving test.
Topics covered in the LGV exam will include weights and dimensions, drivers hours regs, braking systems and speed limiters.
The written test, which brings the UK into line with other European countries, will be run by private company DriveSafe, whose contract with the Driving Standards Agency is worth some £70m. DriveSafe will also administer tests for cars, motorcycles and coaches.
