• The future of Parcelforce and Royal Mail is in the melting pot again following a commitment by the Prime Minister to consider privatisation if the Conservatives win the next general election. Major says he will consider including a sell-off of the Royal Mail in the Conservative election manifesto.
Details are sketchy but a privatisation pledge could also include a sell-off of the Post Office's parcels company. Parcelforce.
The move raises fresh doubts for the two companies' employees just 14 months after the Government, faced with pressure from its MPs, dropped plans to privatise. Before the decision Post Office management had bitterly complained that the political uncertainty was creating problems for its companies.
