• The market for commercial vehicles between 1.8 tonnes and 3.5 tonnes saw some dramatic changes in fortune last year with Ford boosting its registrations of the Transit by over 20%, while Fiat, Mitsubishi and Nissan sales all fell by more than 20%. Overall, this sector grew by just over 6%, and Ford's domination continued unabated. The Transit had a 47.5% share.
Only Leyland Daf managed to retain a double. figuremarket share against this scale of success. In 1989, the 200 and
400 series vehicles took 10.1% with 16,138 sales, but that was down 5.87% on 1988.
Leyland Daf is collaborating with Renault to develop a successor to the 200 and 400 Series; Renault registrations rose 6.9% to 12,684 to take a 7.95% market share.
Mercedes-Benz took fourth place in this market for the first time, overtaking GM. The German marque had 9,338 registrations (5.85%) — up 11.89% on 1988.
