• The Midlands pay round looks like being settled in what. the Transport and General Workers Union calls a "UK benchmark recognising the professionalism of lorry drivers".
Some 10,000 Midlands truck drivers are affected by the deal which if accepted will push wages up by 8.5% (£10411 a week). Subsistence payments will increase from k13.65 to £14.80, with commensurate rises in sickness, accident and insurance payments. Employees with eight years' service will also qualify for an extra three days' holiday.
LI Annual pay negotiations for 1990, between the National Owner Drivers Association and the companies its members work for, will begin next month.
