Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

EAST MIDLANDS haulage drivers have had second thoughts about the i5.90 across-the-board wage increase they turned down before Christmas.

Following further discussions between Transport and General Workers Union and employers' representatives, during which the offer remained unchanged, drivers have now voted to accept the deal, which raises the 40-hour rate for driving 32.5-tonners by 5.9 per cent to .1:106.30 and the equivalent 38-tonne rate by 5.7 per cent to t:109.57..

Overnight subsistence rises by 60p to i12.60 per night, and overtime is paid at double nine after 2pm on Saturdays, instead of till e-and-a-half allday Saturday. The qualifying period for four weeks' paid holiday is down from two years to one.

A settlement looks unlikely in North-East England, where employers have refused to increase an offer of :,3.90 on the 32.5 tonne basic rate of 08.15 for 40 hours and to add 25p to the il 1 overnight subsistence rate.

Lower graded drivers have been offered a pro rata in crease and there is no agreed rate for drivers of 38 tonne lorries.

Shop stewards meet this weekend to discuss their next move and are expected to try to negotiate i6 increases at company level.
