'WAVING attained the age of 80, I I Mr. C. B. Nixon, chairman of the Leyland Group, considers that he should retire from that position, which he has held since 1942. He began his career in transport in 1892 as a pupil with the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, transferring to road transport on his own account in 1897 by forming the Manchester Motor Transport Co., Ltd.
This pioneer concern was the first fleet buyer from the Lancashire Steam Motor Co., a partnership created by Messrs. Spurrier with Mr. James Sumner in 1897, and the original predecessor of the present Leyland Motors, Ltd.
The partnership was registered in 1903 and Mr. Nixon joined the company in 1906.
In the next year the name was changed to Leyland Motors, Ltd., with Mr. Henry Spurrier, grandfather of the present managing director, as chairman. Mr. Nixon was secretary and in 1915 " became general manager, and in 1923 deputy managing director.
He is now succeeded as chairman by Sir Henry Spurrier, who retains his present office as managing director.
Mr. Walter West, deputy managing director, has been appointed deputy chairman. Mr. Nixon retains his seat on the board.
Mr. W. E. Pearson, managing director of .Scaminell Lorries. Ltd., has been appointed to the parent board.
