PROMINENT TRUST'S NEW TRANSPORT ACQUISITIONS MEGOTIATIONS have been com £ pleted for an extension of the road transport interests of Barr and Wallace Arnold Trust, Ltd., of Leeds and Bradford, by the purchase of the businesses of six Yorkshire concerns. The purchases, which involve an aggregate sum approaching £50,000, embrace both motor coach and goods services, chiefly the former. The consequent addition of nearly 40 coaches will bring the number of such vehicles controlled by the Trust to about 120. The additional goods vehicles will increase the Trust's commercial fleet to approximately 50.

The following are the businesses which have been acquired:—Thomas Whitehead Motors, Ltd., Domestic Street. Leeds; Raglan Tours, Ltd., Woodhouse Lane, Leeds; Messrs. A. E. Aspinall and Sons, Pudsey; Messrs. Leighton's of Arinley, Leeds; E. Barker and Sons (Scarborough), Ltd., Scarborbugh; Queen's Motors, Scarborough.

These businesses will continue to work under their present managements, in co-ordination with the Trust's other services.

Mr. Robert Barr, chairman and managing director of the Trust, told a correspondent that, in preparation for large-scale long-distance coach touring this year, the undertaking was making arrangements for hotel accommodation at numerous places in England and Scotland. The Trust contemplated having its own hotels at some resorts.

RESUMPTION OF EXPRESS ROAD SERVICES

f_ jAVING regard to the improved I !labour position, the R.T.C.'s will be prepared to consider applications for the resumption of any express services as from February 1, provided that (a) applicants have the necessary vehicles and labour to maintain the proposed services efficiently without detriment to other essential facilities provided by the applicant as a principal or sub-contractor; (b) resumption of the services will not impose any undue strain or hardship on the operating staff.

The Minister does not consider that the time is ripe for the removal or extension of the present limits of distance over which contract carriages (and excursions and tours) may be operated without prior sanction of the Commissioners.

LEYLAND'S BIG OVERSEAS BUSCHASSIS PROGRAMME TN addition to buses for operators at "tome, more than 350 passenger chassis are now in production for overseas customers at the works of Leyland Motors, Ltd. Countries in Europe and South America will also take delivery of well over 100 of the machines. All the chassis will be fitted with Leyland oil engines of 8.6-litre capacity, and will be built to take 8-ft.-wide bodies. Most of them are for doubledeckers, and for this purpose the model 0.P.D.1 is being supplied. This is a special overseas model, which incorporates numerous detail refinements introduced in post-war Leyland passenger models.

ADRAFT amendment of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations designed to facilitate the operation of certain items of manufacturers' plant used in constructional and engineering work has been submitted to all those concerned, for their observations.

Under Regulation 8, which makes provision for the use of springs in motor vehicles and trailers, except in certain specified cases, further exemption has been made. This affects any vehicle not exceeding 4 tons unladen, specially designed for, and mainly used, in operations which necessitate working on rough ground or unmade roads, if all the wheels be equipped with pneumatic tyres and it be not driven or drawn at a speed exceeding 20 m.p.h.

Regulation 33, concerning overhang • of heavy motorcars: In the case of a vehicle used mainly by a public authority for heating a road in the process of construction, repair or maintenance, no part of the heating plant shall be taken into account when calculating the overhang. In the case of a vehicle designed for tipping to the rear, it should be a sufficient compliance with this Regulation if the overhang does not exceed 45 ins.

Regulation 48, controlling the overall length of trailers except in specified cases, now permits any trailer, being a drying or mixing plant for asphalte, tar macadam, etc., or any road-planing machine, to have a total overall length of trailer and drawing vehicle of 60 ft, inclusive of the drawbar.
