Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN Internal-combustion Engine. Group has been formed by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. This will deal especially with the problems in the design and manufacture of internal-combustion engines of all kinds. Mr. Charles Day, the president of the Institution, has extended a cordial welcome to members of associated institutions to attend meetings a the Group, and there will be an informal discussion on January 18, at 7 p.m. at the headquarters of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Storey's Gate, London, S.W.1.

I N cold weather some hydraulic jacks develop an awkward habit of losing a considerable portion of the oil used in their operation. This is generally due to the valves failing to close, and it is important to see that the relief valve is closed every time after use, whilst light engine oil should be employed, unless any other oil is specified. If the jack will not operate, it should be held a few inches from the ground and dropped squarely on its base. In most cases the shock will cause the defaulting valve or valves to seat. Care must be taken when the base is a casting.

THE local dinner of the Road Haulage Association in Birmingham has been arranged for March 16, and it is interesting to note that, on this occasion, it will be a joint C.M.U.A.-R.H.A. function. Before this date, indeed, it is highly probable that the two Associations will have merged to form a single organization.

T"1935 programmes of the railway companies embodying extensive renewal and extension plans, clearly reflect the anticipated continuance of an increasing measure of prosperity. The plus sign is now finding its way into all sections of railway-traffic returns, and a close study of the statistics should convince those engaged in the road-transport industry of the need for unity of endeavour to resist further railway efforts to progress at their expense. Let the railways march forward in their own sphere and not by seeking to hamper the development of a virile competitor. AN interesting scheme to improve the standard of driving has been developed in a Swedish town by a local motor dub in collaboration with the police authorities. Policemen note the numbers of motor vehicles and against each mark a figure representing, in their view, the number of points which the driver deserves for care and consideration in driving. At the end of three months the points will be totalled and awards will be made to the best drivers.

EMPLOYERS who have installed cleansing and degreasing plants utilizing trichlorethylene should make certain that their employees are warned to avoid a serious danger which may occur. If the vapour, from -the tank be inhaled through a lighted cigarette it is inclined to turn into phosgene—a poison gas used during the war. The medical inspector of factories to the Home Office recently said that there have been four or five deaths in connection with this chemical.
