One factor that can influence your choice of vehicle is the volume of refuse being collected. Supporters of making home-owners pay by weight for the rubbish they want to get rid of point to the Republic of Ireland as an example of a country where such an approach works. However, they tend to forget [or ignore] a key difference between the Republic and the UK, points out Collett.
"In the Republic, householders are able to choose who collects their rubbish and sign an agreement accordingly, which has made a pay-by-weight system quite easy to introduce," he says. "In Britain, it's an established local authority service, and I suspect it will be a long time before pay-as-you-throw [ever] becomes the norm here."
