Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Bryan Jarvis Heanor Haulage, the Langley Mill, Derbyshire-based heavy haulage specialist, has added two new high-spec Scania R144G 530 8x4 STGO Cat 3 prime movers to its fleet, The Scanias, which were supplied by East Midland Commercials, are equipped with Telma retarders.

Both units have 530hp (393kW) 14.2-litre charge-cooled VS engines driving through Teima-ready, factory-prepared 14-speed gearboxes. Heanor carried out the extra axle conversions, adding the Italian-made drop-beam second axles with air suspension and lifting mechanism to the special long-wheelbase 6x4 chassis.

The Telma Fecal 3000 electromagnetic retarders with their dash-mounted control levers were fitted by Haydock Commercials. The Telma system is self-cooling. This is a bonus for heavy haulage applications which often involve shifting loads of up to 150 tonnes at speeds of no more than 15 to 25km/h.

Heanor's fleet engineer, Andy Cole, is satisfied with The Telma's performance. "We get a high degree of braking performance over the full speed range right down to walking pace," he says, "regardless of the gear selected or the engine speed." Heanor runs a range of trailers for typical Cat 3 loads, including Nooteboom five-axle two-deck low-loaders with twoaxle fixed dollies. All the 15-tonne trailer axles steer through the hydraulic steering head, or remotely via a wander-lead when negotiating difficult site roads.
