• The Channel Tunnel, already three months behind schedule, faces further delays unless another 1,000 qualified engineers can be recruited to work on the Kent coast.
Transrnanche Link, the consortium of French and British firms building the tunnel, will launch a nationwide recruitment campaign later this month. They hope to attract more engineers to avoid paying £335,000 compensation for every day's delay up to a maximum of £165 million.
The Confederaton of British Industry is to continue to lobby for increased investment in south eastern roads. It is worried that roads in Surrey, Sussex and Kent will be unable to handle the extra traffic attracted by the Chunnel.
