• b a bid to prevent vehicle excise duty rates from increasing in the next budget, the Road Haulage Association has made it clear to Chancellor Nigel Lawson that European harmonisation can only be achieved by maintaining present UK vehicle tax levels. "We are already paying the highest taxes in Europe, in fact, we are paying between £310 and £320 million more than actual track costs every year. If we are forced to pay more we will be getting further away from the rest of Europe."
The RHA says it is in favour of greater freedom in the provision of road haulage services after 1992 — but only if disparities in taxes between member states can be ironed out. fl The FTA has also launched a pre-budget blitz —see P6.
