THE GOVERNMENT is set to reject pressure to allow heavy lorries to travel at 60mph on dual carriageways.

As CM went to press, Transport Secretary Nicholas Ridley was expected to announce later this week that he had decided to stick to the proposals in last autumn's consultation paper that lorries can travel up to 50mph on dual carriageways, which is 10mph more than at present.

All larger lorries over 3,050kg unladen weight will be allowed to travel at 6 0 mph on motorways, with some smaller lorries being allowed to go at 70mph.

At the same time, Mr Ridley is expected to announce that the Government has reached agreement with the British Standards Institute over the details of a special standard to cover anti spray devices,
