SILICONE brake fluid manufactured by the American Dow Corning company has been introduced to the UK by Automec of Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, but commercial vehicle operators should avoid using it.
While compatible with existing fluids it is not miscible so that the braking system must be drained and flushed through before use.
British original brake and equipment vehicle manufacturers do not advocate its use and Dow Corning says it is recommended only for classic or collectors' cars or for systems designed specifically for it. It is not intended for general application in this country.
The non-hygroscopic fluid conforms to the SAE specification and for more than 10 years has been used by the US military for its vehicles.
Boiling point is greater than that of conventional polyglycol fluids, it has good lubrication qualities when used with rubber seals and does not corrode brake components or harm paintwork.
But apart from being much more expensive, the drawback of being non-hygroscopic, with a boiling point of 450°C, is that should any water enter the system and globulise, it will boil off at 100° and seriously affect braking.
