ph limit
SPEED limits imposed during the fuel crisis should be removed and replaced with the old 70mph limit, says the Freight Transport Association in proposals sent to the Department of Transport.
In a statement, by the FTA, it says speed limits are being devalued by drivers not respecting them, and decisions are being made on the basis of journey economy.
The FTA agrees with the Government view that fuel saving, accidents, driver respect and economy need to be taken into account, but it adds that slower journeys are not always economical.
Other traffic regulations may also be ignored or not be respected as well as speed limits if the present limits are not lifted.
"On dual cal riageways the present limits are far too low," says the Association. "If spe cial circumstances exist on a certain dual carriageway which requires a lower limit, then this could be applied under normal statutory procedures," says the statement..
The vast majority of single carriageway roads could cater for vehicles travelling at speeds far higher than 60mph — and some roads have been designed for speeds higher than motorways claims the FTA.
