Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

LORRY PARK operators have been given just a few days to save their trade association from extinction.

The British Association of Lorry Park Operators looks like being wound up in the next two weeks unless new blood can be found.

BALPO was set up four years ago with Government backing as a result of the Bennett Report.

The Department of the Environment planned to buy up sites and offer them for development by private enterprise as lorry parks.

But the scheme faltered, and last year the Government decided that its lorry park development policy was "not achievable".

Kenneth Goodacre, secretary of BALPO, said: "It was our purpose to represent the people who operated these parks.

"But our reason for existence has been knocked out from under us. Now we only have nine member companies left, and interest seems to be on the wane."

However, one of the Association's members, J. OrmeBannister, believes that BALPO still has a rOle to play.

"There are hundreds of lorry park being run at the moment which have nothing to do with the Government scheme," he said, "No one represents the interests of these operators on a national basis, and BALPO should take on the job."

Mr Goodacre commented: "We would be delighted if we could keep the Association going in this way."

BALPO can be contacted at Brook House, 27 Greenford Avenue, London W7 1LP.
