One feels a runt of criticism in your recent editorial concerning me apparent reluctance of the RHA to include in commercial activities, for the presumed benefit of its members (CM, \January 21).

Tnis question of commercial trading by toe RHA nas been discussed in depth and at length for some years, some feel ad nauseam. and it is quite true to say that many members of the RHA were in favour of the Wells report However, I do not oelieve tnat it is quite fair to imply that area secretaries do not aiready undertake toe passing of commercial inquiries from industry, to mese RHA members woo tney consider to be in the best position to be of assistance. In many instances over the years, especially in the field of tipping, particular areas and sub-areas have been circularised with information of work available.

There is no room for complacency, and, obviously, while a good deal of inter-trading does go on between many RHA members, there is .plenty of room for more. The need to build a spirit of co-operation for the mutual benefit of hauliers, colours the thinking of many of the more active members of the RHA.

In my opinion, the Wells report is comatose but not dead, and there are still many influential members of the RHA who would like to see a further attempt to resuscitate the victim.

Contrary to some opinion, however, the RHA is very much alive, and the knowledge and enthusiasm of some of the up and coming members who are now in responsible and authoritative positions from the sub-areas, right through to the national council, give cause for optimism, and, whilst it may appear on the surface that not very much is happening, the wind of change is blowing, and some cobwebs may well be swept away in the not too distant future.
