THE NEW hourly town bus service operated in Penrith by Ribble Motor Services has been such a success that no cost has been incurred to Lancashire County Council, which had underwritten the service against losses. Passenger numbers carried on the 6p flat fare service have risen steadily from 1,750 a week, when it was first introduced a year ago, to 2,750 now.

Two improvements made since the service started have both resulted in a further increase in passengers. One of these is a route diversion to serve the hospital and the other is an additional Saturday journey.

A Ribble spokesman told CM that this was only one of the marketing exercises that the company was working on. "The hills in Penrith may mean that people prefer to go by bus," he added
