BRITISH Road Services has taken delivery of its first Ford Transcontinentals, following a year of evaluation in the Midlands and Scotland, Midlands BRS is the first company to take delivery. It has nine vehicles, including five HA3424 tractive units powered by Cummins engines developing 250bhp, designed for gross combination weight of 34 tonnes.

Three other vehicles have the 273bhp Cummins engines and are turbocharged to cope with a gross combination weight of 44 tonnes. Both types have the Fuller Roadranger gearbox. Two demonstrators have also been acquired.

During the evaluation tests with an HA 4227 model, the vehicle ran for nearly threequarters of the 73,576 miles laden with an average load of 20 tons, and a fuel consumption of 6.52mpg.
