ALDERMAN A. E. SHEN:NAN, Of Liverpool, has been elected to the vacancies on the Mersey Tunnel and Merseyside Co-ordination Committees, due to the death of Sir Thomas White. As leader of the council, Alderman_ Shennan will occupy the chair of both committees.

MR. C. R. F, ENGELBACH has resigned his position as works director of the Austin Motor Co., Ltd., which he has occupied for the past 16 years. MR. L. P. LORD, formerly managing director of Morris Motors, Ltd., will take over his duties as from March 1. Mr. Engelbach will continue as a director of the company, for which he has done excellent work.

MR. C. B. BARRATT, whose portrait appears on this page, is the son of the chairman of Beckett, Laycock and Watkinson, Ltd, certain of the products of which, under the trade name of Beclawat, are largely used in the commercial-vehicle industry. He represents the company on the municipal transport and aviation sides of the business. Mr. Barratt has been with the company for 15 years, and was married a few days ago.

MR. J. R. CROSS, A.M.I.A.E., who, for some years, has represented Scammell Lorries, Ltd., in the Manchester area, will shortly relinquish his position with the company. He will be succeeded by Ms. G. P. HARDY, who for some time has represented the Scammell interests in the North and East Ridings and the southern part of Yorkshire. Mr. Cross is about to take up an appointment as engineer to an insurance office, but this will not affect his position as honorary secretary to the north-western centre of the Institution of Automobile Engineers.

MR. J. R. THOMAS has joined Garner Motors, Ltd., as general manager. He has had a long association with the commercial-vehicle business and, as long ago as 1922, was with Messrs. Harris and Hasell, of Bristol, who were then concessionnaires for the Reo. Upon the formation of Reo Motors (Britain), Ltd., he joined that company and, later, held a position with the Vulcan concern. For the past seven years he has been with Singer Motors, Ltd., latterly in charge of the company's commercial-vehicle department. His portrait appears on this page. ALL OUT FOR PRODUCER GAS.

We have called attention, from time to time, to the strenuous efforts being made in France to popularize producergas for road transport. In this connection, a motion tabled last week by the road-transport group in the French Chamber of Deputies is of interest. Here are three salient points in the motion:

Factories for the production of " carbonite " compressed fuel must be erected in all suitable districts as quickly as possible.

Country-wide distribution of the fuel must be organized at once.

Compressed fuel pellets are to be used exclusively by French army vehicles fitted with gas-producers.

Mote Tractors in I.F.S.

There seems to have been a fairly active demand for tractors in Eire (Irish Free State) during the past year, a total of 430 machines (valued at £52,319) having been imported, compared with 329 units (£41,175) in 1936.

Frank Discussion on Oil Engines.

A representative of F. Perkins, Ltd., of Peterborough, is giving a lecture, entitled " The High-speed Diesel Issues a Challenge-A Frank Discussion," at the Green Man Hotel, Catford, London, at 7.30 p.n.]. on Monday, February 14.

Liverpool's Transport Overspending.

An increase of about 2s. in the R. on .Liverpool's rates is foreshadowed unless there are drastic " cuts " in the expenditure of committees. The city treasurer's returns for the nine months to December 31. 1937, show a net overspending of £381,413. During this period the passenger transport committee has overspent by £51,044.
