Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Truck sales in November climbed nearly 40% over the same month last year, temporarily halting the down-turn in sales.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, truck registrations hit 4,380 in November—up from 3,155 in November 1996.

Most manufacturers reported increased sales, including the Paccar group which took pole position last month with 989 registrations. Leyland Daf Trucks, part of Paccar, saw registrations soar by 314 in November to 900.

A spokesman for the SMMT says the November increase looks encouraging but it must not be forgotten that the commercial vehicle market was going through a particularly difficult period a year ago.

Registrations for the year to date are still down 11.4% on the 1996 figure.
