• Insurance firms are warning hauliers they will have to pay higher premiums following the Government's decision to make drivers pay for the massive cost of treating accident victims.
Health secretary Frank Dobson hopes to raise ,E100m for the National Health Service by persuading NHS trusts to put in claims against vehicle owners' insurance firms.
A spokesman for the Association of British Insurers says: "How much premiums will rise by depends on how much trusts bill insurance firms."
Norwich Union confirms that commercial vehicle operators will be treated the same way as car users and adds it is difficult to say how large rises will be at this stage.
A spokeswoman warns hauliers: "If we find that we are paying out more because they are having accidents their premiums will rise more than another's judged to be a lower risk."
