• In Sheffield last week the Yorkshire Deputy LA, Mr M. Gosnay, granted an 0 licence application by Picon (Holdings) Ltd, ready-mixed concrete suppliers, for nine vehicles, with a margin of 28, after he had been satisfied that the company had taken steps to improve its maintenance arrangements.
The court heard that the company, which has 45 plants throughout the country, had applied for the extra vehicles, mainly mobile cement mixers, because of an increase in orders which affected depots at Sheffield, Rotherham, Leeds and Bradford.
Mr Gosnay accepted that the maintenance and records systems had been quite good but were not working properly at the time of his inspector's visit to the Sheffield depot. It was clear, he said, that more stringent maintenance methods were now being used.
