I F land used to garage and maintain a fleet of vehicles were compulsorily purchased by York City Council, a family retail-newspaper business, which had been established more than 100 years, might have to close down.

Mr. F. Appleton, inspector of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, was told this at an inquiry at York last week. For the council, Mr. G. H. FOR EXPANSION WORK on the £3m. modernization and YV expansion programme at the Castle Mills plant of the North British Rubber Co., Ltd., will be inspected next Tuesday by Lord Craigton, Minister of State, Scottish Office, Lord Provost Sir Ian A. Johnson-Gilbert, and Sir John Anderson, Secretary of the Scottish Home Department. The capacity of the tyre plant is to be doubled.

MORE FUEL USED ONSUMPTION of petrol in the first nine months of this year was 7.2 per cent, greater, at 5.4m. tons, than in the comparable period of 1958. This was because more premium-grade spirit was used, offsetting a fall in the consumption of standard grade. Deliveries of oil fuel went up by 10.3 per cent. to 1.7m. tons, a record.
