A FULL PARLIAMENTARY debate on fuel duty is moving closer to reality, after the FairFuelUK e-petition received more than 20,000 signatures in its irst four days. Under the government’s new e-petition initiative, if a petition receives 100,000 or more supporters, it will almost certainly be guaranteed a full debate.
Sponsored by Tory MP Robert Halfon, the FairFuelUK e-petition calls on the government to scrap the planned 4ppl duty increases scheduled for January and August 2012 and to stabilise fuel prices.
James Hookham, MD of policy and communications at the Freight Transport Association, says: “High fuel taxes are doing massive damage to Britain’s economy, and if planned rises go ahead, we will effectively be pricing ourselves off the road to recovery.” FairfuelUK’s Peter Carroll says: “The fact that our petition is already at the top of the league of ‘sign-ups’ clearly demonstrates the importance of fuel prices across the country. “This must surely show our MPs and ministers that this is an ongoing crisis and that they must take action.” ● Go to http://bit.ly/FFUK-Gov to sign the petition.
