With its headquarters and main engineering base in Carlisle, DRS is a relatively new company, having been formed in 1995 at the start of rail privatisation. It was initially set up to haul nuclear flasks for its parent company British Nuclear Fuels, and started out with a fleet of five refurbished second-hand ex-BR locos.
It has steadily grown its fleet and its traffic portfolio, and now runs intermodal, scrap metal, passenger charters and Network Rail test trains. It has grown its fleet of refurbished ex-BR locos and its new Class 66s to more than 80 locomotives, and is planning to invest in new locos from Vossloh in the very near future.DRS has opened a second depot at Crewe and a third at Motherwell is in the pipeline, as well as having train crew stationed at Stowmarket, Inverness and other locations nationwide.
The company recently won two prestigious awards, when it was voted the Best Performing Rail Freight Operator in the UK and The Most Improved Rail Operator on Performance by the Institute of Railway Operators. www.directrailservices.com
