• The big rush is on for Freg commercial vehicles, with around 24,000 registered in the first week of August compared with 19,000 last year, according to early Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders estimates.
Sales of commercial vehicles in July were up 19.9% on July 1987, when the total was 12,790. Sales to July are 11% ahead of the same period last year.
Iveco Ford still tops the league for trucks and artics with 24.7% of the market in the first seven months of the year. It is followed by: Leyland Daf, 22.5'.; Mercedes-Benz, 14.8%; Volvo, 10%; Renault, 7.1%; ERF, 5.4%; Scania, 4.4%; MAN, 4%, Seddon Atkinson, 3.4%, and lastly Foden, with 2%.
In the car-derived van market, Ford and General Motors (Vauxhall) are neck-and-neck. Ford registrations are 17,471 in the year to date; GM registrations are 17,269. Austin Rover registered 10,550.
Ford still leads the under 15-tonne market by a long way, with 34,629 registrations in the year to July. Freight Rover has 9,863 and Renault 6,249. Peugeot Talbot and Nissan have both increased their totals on the first seven months of last year.
Volvo registered the most PSVs in the period — 482. It is followed by Leyland Bus (now owned by Volvo) with 402, giving Volvo a mighty lion's share. MCW has 315, followed by the smaller manufacturers some way behind.
