Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The truck contract-hire and rental interests of Ford & Slater, and Trailerent, both part of the Mercantile Group, are to be merged giving the new division a fleet of more than 2,000 vehicles and 13 depots.

The company will be known as Truckrent Limited and have a £10 million investment by 1989, with a target of 30 branches by 1990. Truckrent had been the name of the commercial vehicle hire arm of Trailerent, bought by Mercantile Group in 1982.

Truckrent will be based at Ford & Slater's premises in Leicester and the company is looking to appoint an operations director who will report to Ford & Slater managing director Stephen Brand. Mike Dibb, managing director of Trailerent, will also join the board of the new company.

Mercantile Services director Tony Gamble says: "It makes "more sense to develop the two companies together. At the moment we don't have enough density and need to open more depots."

Ford & Slater, bought by Mercantile in February, also owns four Leyand Daf truck dealerships (in Leicester, Peterborough, Lincoln and Donnington) and three Mercedes-Benz (in Aylesbury, Norwich and Ipswich).

These dealerships will continue to operate under the Ford & Slater name.
