Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE ROAD haulage industry should make sure that two gallant South Wales operators, Richard Read Transport, of Longhope, and George M. Read Transport, of Micheidean, do not suffer financially for doing what British Steel and the National Coal Board did not have the courage to do.

In seeking to enforce injuctions to prevent miners unlawfully stopping their vehicles, they have called the National Union of Mineworkers' bluff and risked serious consequences. They have placed themselves in possible danger also to uphold the rights of all hauliers to carry on their lawful businesses in peace.

John Wells, when he was chairman of the Road Haulage Association, paid the penalty for his outspoken attacks on dockers' reprehensible practices. His businesses went into liquidation. The dockers, however, were relatively civilised.

The RHA might consider awarding them the George and Richard Cross.
