Venables foundry has been fined £60,000 after a steel bar being shunted from one part of a yard to another by a truck fell onto one of its employees.

In a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecution, Derby Crown Court was told how the 61-year-old from Dronfield, who does not wish to be named, was working at the company's site in Dronfield, Derbyshire in April 2011.

The 1.6-tonne, 9m-long bar and the steel barrow it was travelling on fell as it was being pushed across the yard by the truck.

The man suffered severe injuries, including two broken legs, a broken pelvis, a crushed right foot and a damaged left knee.

An HSE investigation found the steel bar was not secured to the barrow, that the barrow had no brakes and that it was simply being shunted by the truck rather than having a physical connection.

Padley and Venables was ordered to pay £16,419 costs after pleading guilty to breaching Section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
