Archie Meechin's licence was originally issued in Edinburgh by the TAO. "I got my licence in 1987," he says. 1 was diagnosed a diabetic in October 1989 and informed the Traffic Commissioner and the DVLA. I was allowed to continue driving and I heard no more until I sent the licence off for renewal in November 1990."

Meechin's licence was revoked. Then the paperwork was lost, and by the time he re-applied the original licence had timed out. Despite spending 11,000 on a lawyer he has so far failed to get Et back.

"They tell you that if you are an insulin diabetic, you had a licence before April 1991, that the TO knew and have had no complications, you can still drive," he says. "But that's not the case for me. They've never sought an opinion from my GP or anybody, and they've just sent me another letter which basically says 'don't contact us anymore'."

Meechin successfully re-applied for a Cl licence,
