• Work on building the Ml-Al link could begin early next year, says transport secretary John Moore. The 73kin dual carriageway will run from Catthorpe, Northamptonshire, at Junction 19 on the MI, bypassing Naseby, Kelmarsh, Rothwell, Orion, Kettering and Thrapston, before joining the Al, north-west of Brampton, Cambridgeshire. Work should be completed by mid-1991 and will cost an estimated £26 million.

• TDG Cairngorm, responsible for 17 TDG trading companies in Scotland and the North of England, is pioneering a teaching company programme with Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh. Teaching companies link industry with university technology research and the TDG programmes will be at its subsidiaries Inter-City Transport and John Russell (Grangemouth).

III The turnover of takeover giant Bunzl, which acquired United Parcels last year, has topped £1 billion for the first time. Pre-tax profits were up 52% to 264.8 million, with United Parcels chipping in £10.5 million. Last year Bunzl completed 23 takeovers at a total cost of £98 million.
